JOB DESCRIPTION FOR SLPPOA WATER SYSTEMS OPERATOR

 

Job Summary/Scope  This is an entry-level flexible-shift position involving semi-skilled work in connection with water filtration and pumping to provide safe drinking water for residents of Sierra Los Piños (SLP).  Candidate will be available on-call 24/7 to address any problems which may rise and should reside within 25 miles of SLP.   The community of Sierra Los Piños is located at mile marker 33 on NM State Road 4.

 

Job Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain pumps, filtration equipment and water supply lines

• Assure proper calibration of water quality monitoring equipment 

• Collect samples and submit NM environmental reports in a timely manner

• Adjust chemical/chlorination field equipment for proper operation as needed 

• Perform monthly residential meter readings and follow up on any “red flags” 

• Keep survey plat maps current and available for inspection as may be required 

• Maintain, inspect and provide input on repair or replacement of water system infrastructure, immediately (within two days) whenever failure is suspected 

• Become Point of Contact and coordinate with NM 811 in marking water lines

• Engage contractors for repairs and services as needed and keep records of same 

• Coordinate tank inspections with a dive team as recommended every five years

• In the event of contamination, work with appropriate State authorities and agencies to return the water system to renewed and contaminant-free operation 

• Monitor tank levels via remote web-based system and subsequent site visits 

• Attend meetings (membership, Board, water work meetings) per Board request  

 

Minimum Qualifications – Education & Experience

• High school diploma or G.E.D.

• Valid driver’s license issued by the State of New Mexico

• Possession of or ability to obtain within one year of hire any required state-certified license for water treatment and/or distribution as may be appropriate (SLP Property Owners’ Association will be responsible to pay for this training)

• Maintain and provide proof of liability insurance and workers’ compensation

• Knowledge of water system pumps, boosters, supply lines & related equipment

• Knowledge of federal, state and county laws, ordinances, and/or regulations as relevant to compliant and clean operation of water treatment and distribution

• Skill in collection of water samples and interpretation of lab tests and analyses

• Skill in performing relevant mathematical computations

• Skill in communicating well, both orally and in writing

• Ability to engage residents, suppliers, contractors, state agency representatives, etc. in a courteous and respectful manner to alleviate conflicts and complaints

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, uses tools for equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.  The employee must be physically able to manually dig and fill in a trench.  The employee must be physically able to open a manhole cover and enter a confined space below ground while adhering to applicable safety standards.  The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals.  The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles and/or gloves.

 

Salary: $20,000 per year, paid in monthly installments.  Any necessary costs which may be incurred for required travel and per diem and/or any purchase greater than $50.00 for any necessary equipment or supplies shall first be approved by the Board.

SLPPOA will pay for such training at no cost to applicant other than a commitment to serve as community water operator for a period of time to be determined.  A list of three current references and complete contact information shall be provided.  Any of these references should be able to attest to the applicant’s recent work history in the field and/or applicant’s character as pertains to work ethic.
