Under the general supervision of the Utilities Operations Manager, responsible for the operation and maintenance of the CRRUA’s water and wastewater treatment facilities, liquid waste disposal facilities, wastewater laboratory, and sludge disposal facilities. Provides technical support for multiple treatment plant operations, including acting as lead worker coordinating and overseeing work of crew assigned. 

Responsibilities

Performs Lead Worker responsibilities.  Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for assigning and monitoring the work of staff, daily plant operations and maintenance functions.
  • Provides leadership to staff and assists with operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities, including inspecting, operating and repairing equipment, cleaning facilities, and recording equipment operations.
  • Provides input and feedback to managers on hiring, work schedules, disciplinary actions and performance evaluations
  • Provides day-to-day guidance, leadership, mentoring, and training to all plant operators
  • Ensures that all operations are conducted in compliance with safety practices. Ensures all required testing is performed correctly adhering to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED) strict guidelines.

Performs Water/Wastewater duties. Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Performs analysis of instrument readings, data, operations records and reports.
  • Monitors the treatment chemicals, laboratory chemicals, and supplies necessary for departmental operations.
  • Oversees the operations of lift stations, collection systems, wells, booster stations, distribution systems, laboratory and sludge operations, including testing of solids to dispose of at landfill.
  • Repairs equipment and monitors preventive maintenance program in order to enhance the longevity of equipment and facilities.
  • Operates a variety of water/wastewater equipment including but not limited to pumps, control panels, disinfection system, blowers and mixers, etc.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES.  Position requires availability for responding to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.

Qualifications

Education.High school diploma or GED required.  Associates Degree in Water Wastewater Technology or related field preferred.
 
Experience.  Five (5) years experience in water and wastewater facility operations providing extensive knowledge of biological processes, equipment, tools, physical operations, and methods used in inspecting, cleaning, operating, and maintaining water and wastewater facilities.    Lead worker or supervisory experience is preferred.    
 
Education/Experience substitution.  In accordance with Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) policy.
 
Licenses/Certifications.  Must have a valid unrestricted Driver’s License and maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with CRRUA policy; NM Water Level III & NM Wastewater Level IV certifications are required.  May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one year of hire.
 
Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.).  Background check and driver’s license check and verification of Certifications.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Current water/wastewater systems and operating procedures; mathematical calculations associated with operation and maintenance of wastewater facilities; pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic arithmetic.  Analyze and evaluate information accurately and express ideas clearly when providing oral and written reports and recommendations; use initiative and judgment in working independently while recognizing matters which require the awareness of the Utilities Operations Manager; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
