A "field assistant" at a water company is an entry-level position where the primary responsibility is to support the field technicians in various tasks related to the maintenance and repair of the water distribution system, including locating leaks, assisting with valve operations, reading meters, and performing basic maintenance checks on equipment, usually under the direct supervision of a more experienced technician; essentially acting as a helper in the field for day-to-day operations of the water system.
Key responsibilities of a field assistant at a water company may include:
- Assisting with leak detection: Helping to locate leaks by using listening devices, surveying the area, and marking potential leak locations.
Valve operation: Assisting in opening and closing valves to isolate sections of the water system for maintenance or repairs.
Meter reading: Reading water meters at customer properties and recording usage data.
Excavation support: Assisting with digging and backfilling trenches for pipe repairs.
Equipment maintenance: Performing basic cleaning and upkeep on tools and equipment used in the field.
Data collection: Recording relevant information such as pipe sizes, valve locations, and customer details.
Customer service interaction: Responding to basic customer inquiries regarding water service issues.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Physical ability: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform manual labor including lifting and digging.
Basic mechanical skills: Understanding of basic tools and equipment used in plumbing and construction.
Attention to detail: Ability to accurately record data and follow instructions.
Good communication skills: Effectively communicating with customers and colleagues.
Valid driver's license: To operate company vehicles to reach work sites.

With experience and further training, a field assistant can progress to a more specialized role within the water company, such as a full-fledged field technician, responsible for more complex repairs and maintenance tasks.
